The courageous roles played by Muslims in protecting Jews from Nazi German soliders during the Second World War is the subject of a new booklet launched yesterday.

The Role of Righteous Muslims, published by Faith Matters, chronicles the actions of heroes who saved Jewish families from persecution and death.

Fiyaz Mughal OBE from Faith Matters, writing on the Harry’s Place blog yesterday, said the research contrasted sharply with the “dehumanisation of Muslims and the demonisation of Islam” in public discourse.
.
He writes:
.
"There were even suggestions that Muslims should feel a collective guilt on the Holocaust, which was just plain wrong. [Our booklet] gives the wider public and those within Jewish communities an understanding of these deeply shared histories between Muslims and Jews and to shine a light on a few of the roots of social justice that existed during this catastrophic time in Europe’s history."

There is a lot to commend this project, however we hope the use of the title “Righteous Muslims” does not give the impression that the heroes highlighted in this booklet were exceptions, because while they were acting in exceptional circumstances, the belief in humanity is shared by most Muslims and is the norm not the exception.
.
During the nightmare period of Nazi persecution of Jewish people, what took place was a practical demonstration of Islam by the brave characters, which are celebrated in the booklet. However we congratulate Mughal and Faith Matters on their work, which makes a valuable contribution to the debate.
