The Coexistence Trust is to launch a project to recruit Jewish and Muslim 'Ambassadors' in Britain's university to promote positive dialogue. The move comes as the organisation calls for calm debate on campuses in the wake of the Israeli raid on the flotilla.

The Trust has been tackling Islamophobia and anti-Semitism on campuses, and is urging students to conduct debate in ways that seek solutions not divide communities.

We are responding to the current situation by announcing it will be recruiting Muslim and Jewish ‘Campus Ambassadors’ from twelve major universities across Britain so that good relations between communities can be maintained during times of international crisis.

Using the vision of “respect, empower and change”, The Coexistence Trust, will bring the organisations’ expertise in conflict resolution and leadership development to develop a network of Campus Ambassadors, to foster positive inter-communal dialogue between Muslim and Jewish students.

Co-director Samuel Klein said: “We have seen, in the past, a backlash in university campuses when controversial international incidents have involved the Middle East.

“We are working directly with students so that they can play their part in responses that avoids polarising positions that sustain suspicion and mistrust.”

Co-director Rokhsana Fiaz added: “It is important that, at difficult times like this, we find practical responses to limit the impact on Muslim and Jewish relations in the UK.

“That’s why the Coexistence Trust is providing skill-based conflict resolution training for Muslim and Jewish students which they can use to mediate fallout from international crises. “By recruiting Jewish and Muslim Ambassadors in universities, we believe students can lead a positive inter-communal response.”
