STUDENT ENGAGEMENT
Building bridges
We aim to be a leading independent not-for-profit agency delivering programmes on and off campus with the goal of bridge building between Muslim and Jewish student society groups as well as those of other faith communities.
Mediating conflict
We aim to act as key delivery agents in the area of conflict resolution and mediation between groups on campus as well as delivering high quality skills based courses in partnership with other interfaith organisations and government representative bodies. These will address perceptions of and engagement with both Muslim and Jewish groups within the wider university context.
Providing high-level advice
The responsibility for ensuring campuses are free from harassment and discrimination rests with individual higher education institutions (HEIs) such as Universities UK and the Equality Challenge Unit as well as with individual university administrations. As such, The Coexistence Trust will work directly with HEI’s in helping institutions tackle racial and religious intolerance, including islamophobia and antisemitism, in higher education.
Realising potential
The Coexistence Trust will continue to encourage and support higher education institutions to ensure that racism and discrimination have no place in higher education. We hope to advise institutions to address equality issues holistically and move beyond basic compliance of the law, with the aim of ensuring campuses are free from intolerance whilst positively providing an environment that supports bringing the diverse communities Higher Education serves closer together.
Enhancing the Higher Education experience
An essential part of our work will be to ensure that that the talents of all in Higher education are successfully used and that no group is excluded from participating fully in academic life. We will promote a climate of tolerance and mutual respect between student societies which is fundamental to enabling the open and free exchange of ideas - integral to the HE experience.
Objectives
- To develop a national network of students from faith societies, committed to fostering positive and constructive communication.
- To give students a broad picture of some key issues and challenges of Interfaith work from a variety of perspectives and what is on offer to enhance leadership skills in this field.
- To provide students with a neutral space to reflect on campus relations between student community groups and what can be done to enhance these relations.
- To give students an opportunity to expand their knowledge base and leadership capacity through bespoke sessions on key areas such as: political engagement and conflict resolution, tools for interfaith education, multi-faith action and faith in the global agenda.
